ROM and Stretching

What Is ROM and Stretching?

Range of motion (ROM) describes how freely a joint moves. When ROM is limited, everyday movements can feel stiff, painful, or restricted—like reaching overhead, turning your head, squatting, or walking normally.

Stretching and mobility work in physical therapy are guided, progressive strategies that help improve flexibility, joint motion, and movement quality. At Farmington Physical Therapy, we use the right type of stretching and mobility exercises at the right intensity—then progress them over time—so improvements translate into real-life movement.

ROM & stretching may help you:

  • Reduce stiffness and tightness
  • Improve joint mobility and flexibility
  • Restore normal movement after injury or surgery
  • Move more comfortably during daily activities
  • Improve posture and movement mechanics
  • Decrease strain on joints and tissues
  • Support long-term mobility and injury prevention

Conditions ROM and Stretching Helps Treat

Mobility limitations can come from injury, surgery, repetitive stress, arthritis, or long-standing compensation patterns. A structured ROM and stretching plan can help restore motion and reduce the “guarding” that makes movement feel stuck.

ROM & stretching may help with:

  • Neck stiffness and reduced rotation
  • Low back tightness
  • Shoulder stiffness (including post-op restrictions)
  • Hip tightness or limited mobility
  • Knee stiffness after injury or surgery
  • Ankle mobility limitations (common after sprains)
  • Arthritis-related stiffness
  • Muscle tightness, cramps, and tension
  • Postural restrictions from prolonged sitting/standing
  • Sports-related mobility limitations
