Orthotic Fitting

What Is Orthotic Fitting?

Orthotic fitting is the process of evaluating your feet, gait, and overall alignment to select or design inserts that provide the right support where you need it most.

  • Your therapist uses this process to:
  • Improve foot and ankle alignment
  • Reduce stress on knees, hips, and low back
  • Cushion painful areas and offload pressure points
  • Enhance stability during walking, running, and daily activities
  • Support long-term comfort and joint health

By combining a detailed physical exam with semi-custom orthotics, we help address the root cause of your pain—not just the symptoms.

Conditions Orthotic Fitting Helps Address

Proper foot support can make a big difference in how your entire body moves and feels. Orthotic fitting can be especially helpful for:

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Forefoot pain and metatarsalgia
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Shin splints and overuse injuries
  • Knee, hip, or low back pain related to poor mechanics
  • Bunions and toe alignment issues
  • Foot fatigue from standing or walking at work

What to Expect

At Farmington Physical Therapy, your orthotic fitting experience is individualized and education-focused, so you understand how your orthotics work and how to get the most benefit from them.

1

A Warm, Welcoming First Visit

You’ll be greeted by our friendly team and guided through a simple check-in. Your therapist will review your medical history, footwear habits, and any pain or limitations you’re experiencing.
2

Comprehensive Evaluation

We assess your foot structure, arch type, and overall alignment. This may include watching how you walk, checking joint mobility, and performing specific tests to see how your feet and legs function together.
3

Custom Orthotic Selection or Design

Based on your evaluation, your therapist will recommend the best orthotic option - custom, semi-custom, or specialized inserts. We’ll explain why a particular style and level of support is right for you and how it fits into your larger treatment plan.
4

Fitting, Fine-Tuning & Education

Your orthotics are carefully fitted inside your shoes, and we make sure they feel comfortable and supportive in standing and walking. You’ll receive guidance on how long to wear them each day at first, what to expect as you adjust, and which shoes work best.
5

Follow-Up & Ongoing Support

We schedule follow-up as needed to check comfort, make adjustments, and reassess your movement. As your symptoms improve and your mechanics change, we’ll update your plan so your orthotics continue to support your goals at work, in sport, and in everyday life.
At Farmington Physical Therapy, your health is personal. Our team is here to help you move with confidence, recover with purpose, and live life to the fullest.

We begin with a comprehensive evaluation, develop a personalized plan, and walk with you every step of the way toward recovery.
